I've worked in engineering for over 25 years. I have spent time at Lockheed and now at Boeing. Boeing at one time was the premier aerospace company to work for. Now, as an engineer you might as well be working on a production line. There is no concern for doing things right. Although the government is only worried about schedule so, they lead this bad effort. As an engineer you will lose all sense of creativity and what you went to school for. They went to off the shelf software and it has taken us back 20 years in engineering. At one time engineers had a lot of say in what happened at Boeing. Now it's a management company and every engineer feels like they are on the chopping block. As you have seen in the news all the drama around the 787 that is from all the bad management decisions. Seattle, Wa at least has a union to protect their engineers from abusive managers. Philly is known throughout Boeing as the arm pit of management. Bully your employees with bad schedules and chase any older folks away you can to save in benefits. If your older than 40 look out. You feel like you have a big target on your back. I only stay because of the benefits. I'll be retired soon and will never look back. I have won more awards and had saved the company millions of dollars on programs but, frowned upon because now i am at the tip of the pay scale. If your a young engineer look up the best companies to work for and go for them. This isn't the place it could be. I blame the government for setting up Boeing for such a bad community. They never have their requirements to us in time and set us back months. I know a lot folks in this industry, it's a shame that the government doesn't directly talk to them to find out what is going on. Make it part of their contract. I know such more but, i'm saving that for my book.
